Opposition leader Felix Tshisekedi has been sworn in as president of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after a week of uncertainty. The political crisis in the Congolese capital Kinshasa, home to the world's largest oil reserves, intensified after lawmakers ousted parliament on Wednesday as President Felix pressured lawmakers on his way to dissolve a shaky governing coalition.
FIFA Council member Constant Omari has been arrested on suspicion of corruption and is to be questioned over alleged involvement in embezzlement, officials said. Omidi, who is also vice president of the Confederation of African Football, was arrested at his home in Kinshasa on Wednesday, according to a statement from Bambi's office, according to the International Football Association (FIFA).
Omari, the president of the Congo Football Association, was arrested along with three other members of the Confederation of African Football's executive committee. The four are to be questioned over allegations that they misappropriated more than $1 million in state funds that the government gave to the federation to fund various Congolese clubs competing in competitions across Africa. The League of Congo has been suspended from games and football in the Democratic Republic of Congo is up and down for the first time since the end of last season.
After finishing third in the last competition, Congo should rediscover its pedigree as one of Africa's strongest national teams and face stiff opposition from any side it meets, though progress in a group that includes Ivory Coast and Togo could prove insurmountable.
The squad brought to Gabon includes five players from Congo, one of whom, Kinshasa's Vita Club, was a Champions League winner in 2014, while the rest have played their football mostly in European leagues. Mbemba's talent ensured that he quickly became the focus of the national coaches of the Congo, even though he was not eligible for the 2012 Olympics despite his birth date in 1988, because the Democratic Republic of Congo team was in the qualifying round and had made it out of it. According to a copy of the official Congolese player ID, sent to CNN on August 8, 1988, before joining MK Dons, Emba has played for various clubs in his homeland since he was 16. Asked whether Mbimba could play for Congo at different ages, FECOFA President Constant Omari refused to answer the question.
The first thing we did was make sure some of our best footballers would play their football for the Congo.
Wherever Mazembe's money came from, it funded a revival that quickly took Katumbi's side back to the summit of African club football. The generalissimo's lavish spending paid off as Congo won the Africa Cup of Nations, beating the Black Stars 1-0 in the final. A year later they won the African Champions League for the first time, beating Nigeria's Heartland 2-1 in front of their home fans in Kinshasa Stadium. Congo, which was renamed Zaire to Afrianize the country and its infrastructure - a process known as authentic - secured a place in this year's Africa Cup of Nations after qualifying.
Kinshasa was also known for corruption and violence during Mobutu's rule, but it has nonetheless always attracted new people to the nation. The Republic of Congo has not yet sworn in a new president and democratisation has been on hold for a decade.
Belgian king who wanted Congo as a colony, playing off the power of others. Joseph Kony's LRA entered the DRC in the late 1990s with support from the United States and its allies, and Ugandans responded by forming their own rebel group, the Democratic Republic of Congo Liberation Army of Rwanda (DRC).
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) was embarrassed when FIFA introduced MRI scans to ensure no ageing players were used. African participants conducted their own tests, finding that at least half of their African Cup of Nations - the winning teams were aged out - failed, and Nigeria was forced to remove dozens of players from its proposed squad.
Today, catwalks are increasingly common in the streets of Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and one of Africa's most popular tourist destinations. Like Brazzaville in the north, on the banks of a Congo river, it is the only capital facing the capital. It would be difficult to give figures on the number of footballers in the Ivory Coast national team, but more can be seen in the national stadium, home to the country's largest football club, FC Congo.
That is not to say that Congolese football is not familiar with success, but that it should experience so much more. Congo is not as passionate about football as other African nations, which makes it the continent's biggest underdog given its size.
In 1996 in Atlanta, when she represented Zaire (renamed Democratic Republic of Congo) at the 1996 Olympic Games, Mabika introduced herself to the basketball world. It should not be forgotten that in 1996 they were the first African country to participate in an Olympic women's basketball tournament.
